"Loup De Bois de construction" is my favorite -- it literally means Wolf of Construction Wood! [lol]

And Super Moby Dick sounds even more retro-cool in French...

OK, I just have to say, "Chaval del Relámpago" made me laugh out loud! Talk about corny!!! "Blitz Junger Mann" is pretty funny, too...

I've run across my sister as being:
~ "Stella" in French (Star)
~ "Morgenstern" in German (Morning Star)
~ "Estrella del Alba" in Spanish (Star of Dawn)
~ "Aamutähti" in Finnish (Morning Star)

In my old comic books, they refer to Dawnstar as Lucero, a word that means bright star. "Lucero del Alba" is a common expression, it usually refers to Venus.

In French, Dawnstar could be "L'étoile de l'aube", literally star of dawn.

I did a double take and laughed with Timber Wolf as "Wolf of Construction Wood" - just goes to show how difficult translation is. Maybe Loup des bois (woods) or Loup des pins (pine trees, since some timber is pine and it sounds good).

I already have a question for you :-)
Do Greek editions of the Legion translate Legionnaire's names? At one point we had a thread with translations of Legionnaire's names in different languages (I remember seeing French, Spanish and even Finnish versions... Given the etymological connections between Greek and English I think that some of these could be quite interesting...

They did. Not accurately but they did. There are several ways to translate their names in Greek. One is by "agglomeration" as is often the case in German. But agglomeration in Greek would make their names sound really silly. So they translated them either directly or - more often than not - in a round about way. For example Saturn Girl would be "Girl from Saturn" since directly translating "Saturn" and "girl" would be rather meaningless.
The translations below are in Latin letters (I'll try to post an image of what their names actually look like in Greek. The first part is the actual names used in the Greek editions of Legion stories back in the 60s and the second part is other Legionnaires' or Legion characters' names who have never appeared in the Greek editions. Also, the word "pedi" (hence, pediatrician, pedagogic etc) means both "child" and "boy", while "agori" means "boy". In new comics editions nowadays they tend to leave the names untranslated in most cases.
Doctor One thought it might be fun to try to guess which name is which, so I won't post a "who's who" yet. [Big Grin]

Leyeon ton (H)yper-(h)eroon

Koritsi tou Kronou
Kosmiko Pedi
Nearos tou Keravnou/Astrapis
Pedi tou (H)eliou
Breniak Pente (name untranslated. If his name was to be actually translated it'd be Enkefalikos Pente).
Pedi-Hameleon
(H)yperkoritsi
(H)yperpedi
Pedi-Topi
Aorato Pedi
Mon-El (obviously). [Smile]

Kopela tis Skias
Koritsi ton Oneiron
Chemikos Vasilias
Pedi tou Karate
Koritsi tis Nyktas
Nearos ton Stoiheion (Alchemistis)
Agori ton Astron
Dropali Violeta
Kolossiaeo Agori
Lefki Mayissa
Prinkipissa Protzektra
Oultra Agori
Kopela tis Molynsis
Tyrok
Agrio Pyr
Tripli/Tridimi Kopela (Dipli Kopela or Kopela-Duo)
Kinitiki
Koritsi Fantasma
Siderenio Agori
Astro tis Avyis
Monos/Monahikos Lykos
Kopela tis Astrapis/Keravnou
Agori Ylovoros
Poliko Agori
Agori tis Petras
Pedi tis Hlorofylis
Nearos tis Fotias
Vasilissa ton Entomon

and some villains:

Payideftis tou (C)hronou
Mordru o Magos
Koritsi Arahni
Pedi tis Nemesis
Smaragdenia Aftokrateira
Ypohreotis
To Heri (or simply Mano/The Hand in Italian)
Tharok
Validus
Komputo o Kataktitis
Doktor Rigulos

Zeto e Leyeona (Long Live the Legion)!!

Come to think of it most of their names would sound much better and infinitely more poetical in Ancient Greek,(for example Sun Boy = Phaethon, Dream Girl = Morphaea, Saturn Girl = Kronis/Kronidia, Lightning Lad = Keravnios etc) but it's too big a task to do that right now. [Razz]

I could dig up some Legion mags from Sweden and Italy I've got and post the translated names, and I've also got a legion magazine from Egypt but I don't speak a word of Arabic.

Hey, this is really fun. Just so you know, I don't speak a word of Greek. And I've figured out dissapointingly few of these. I think we need to make a team effort out of this...

I'll start with the obvious ones:

Leyeon ton (H)yper-(h)eroon=Legion of Super Heroes

Koritsi tou Kronou= well, koritsi means girl, apparently, and kronou sounds like it has something to do with time. Kid Quantum? Oh, no, wasn't Chronos the god of Saturn? Saturn Girl!
Kosmiko Pedi=obviously Cosmic Boy
Nearos tou Keravnou/Astrapis=no idea, but because of the order I'll say Lightning Lad
Pedi tou (H)eliou=Sun Boy!
Breniak Pente (name untranslated. If his name was to be actually translated it'd be Enkefalikos Pente)=Brainy. I think we should start calling him Enkefalikos
Pedi-Hameleon=Chameleon Boy
(H)yperkoritsi= took me a minute, but Supergirl!
(H)yperpedi= Superboy
Pedi-Topi= Topi Boy? No idea.
Aorato Pedi= Ditto
Mon-El (obviously)
Kopela tis Skias= Sounds vaguely like it should have something to do with sky. Dawnstar?
Koritsi ton Oneiron= Shadow Lass? Oneiron sounds vaguely like something dark...
Chemikos Vasilias=Chemical King, obviously
Pedi tou Karate=Karate Kid
Koritsi tis Nyktas=Night Girl
Nearos ton Stoiheion (Alchemistis)=Element Lad
Agori ton Astron=Star Boy?
Dropali Violeta=Shrinking Violet
Kolossiaeo Agori=Colossal Boy
Lefki Mayissa=??? the White Witch?
Prinkipissa Protzektra=obviously Projectra
Oultra Agori=Ultra Boy
Kopela tis Molynsis=kopela apparently also means girl. But molynsis is a mystery... I'm going to say Dream Girl, just 'cause
Tyrok=obvious
Agrio Pyr= no idea. Wait, Wildfire! (Pyro from the X-men helped here)
Tripli/Tridimi Kopela (Dipli Kopela or Kopela-Duo)+Triplicate Girl
Kinitiki=Kinetix
Koritsi Fantasma=Phantom Girl
Siderenio Agori= no idea
Astro tis Avyis= wait, I already had something with Astron (I'm so confused!)
Monos/Monahikos Lykos= Timber Wolf! (I love this one. Lycos would be a cool alternative name for him)
Kopela tis Astrapis/Keravnou=Now I'm pretty sure that the one above is Lightning Lad. This one is Lightning Lass.
Agori Ylovoros= voros sounds like it has to do with eating. Matter-Eater Lad?
Poliko Agori=Polar Boy?
Agori tis Petras= Stone Boy!
Pedi tis Hlorofylis=Chlorophyll Kid!
Nearos tis Fotias=don't know, but the obvious sub missing is Fire Lad
Vasilissa ton Entomon=Insect Queen! (I know this because of entomology class...)

and some villains:

Payideftis tou (C)hronou=Time Trapper (wait, this chronou is spelled differently than the kronou from above...)
Mordru o Magos=obvious
Koritsi Arahni=no idea. Wait, Spider Girl?
Pedi tis Nemesis=Nemesis Kid
Smaragdenia Aftokrateira=Emerald Empress
Ypohreotis=Persuader? (Just because of the placement in the list...)
To Heri (or simply Mano/The Hand in Italian)
Tharok
Validus
Komputo o Kataktitis
Doktor Rigulos
[Smile]

Let's see, that leaves (I've only removed the ones I'm pretty sure about):

-Pedi-Topi
-Aorato Pedi
-Kopela tis Skias
-Koritsi ton Oneiron
-Agori ton Astron
-Lefki Mayissa
-Kopela tis Molynsis
-Nearos tis Fotias
-Siderenio Agori
-Astro tis Avyis
-Nearos tis Fotias

Koritsi ton Oneiron has to be Dream Girl, not Shadow Lass. So maybe that makes Kopela tis Molynsis Shadow Lass.
