The discussion over Dave C's wedding pages from SLSH 200 got me thinking about on-panel Legion weddings, and the artists who drew them.

-We had the faux weddings of ADV 337, drawn by John Forte, with the Swan cover.

-Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel in the fore-mentioned 200 by Dave.

-Garth and Imra for real, in That Damned Tabloid by Mike Grell.

-Projectra and Karate Kid in v2 Annual 2, by the Giff(?).

-Tenzil married Saturn Queen in v4 #50, with art by Darryl Banks.

-and Jo and Tinya were depicted in v4 #96 by Lee Moder.

Some impressive company there... any I missed?

I think it was Dave Gibbons.

Keith did the cover, Dave (Gibbons) did the interiors.

I think it was Stuart Immonen who did the pencils in that issue, not Banks.

There was Cham's 'almost' wedding to Elwinda (I think that was the name) in Adventure # 376. I believe that was during Win Mortimer's run.

And did we ever see Gim and Yera's wedding or just the announcement at the dinner with his parent's that they were married?

Guess I'll keep adding on here.

What about vol. 4 # 45 where the Luck Lords are reviewing Garth's life. I know they think of his wedding but I don't know which of the artists on that issue did that particular page. This is who I know worked on the issue: Curt Swan, Dave Cockrum, Mike Grell, Keith Giffen and I think Greg Larocque. Anyone I missed? And does anyone know who did the page with the wedding, if it was indeed shown?

Oh, and Legionnaires Annual # 1. The Elseworlds Arthurian issue. Weren't Rokk and Imra getting married at the begining of the story?

Last one I promise. What about Walt Simonson in SLSH # 237? I know they weren't married in that issue but I think its the one that has Garth and Imra leaving for their honeymoon.

50 was a double-size issue with multiple artists. Immonen drew the pages involving Jan Arrah's near-death experience, but I'm pretty sure Banks drew the Tenz stuff... I'll have to check when I get home.

And thanks to you and Froggy for the Gibbons correction on the annual. Wasn't there a 2-page spread in the end of the annual, with all the Legionnaires and auxilliary characters, drawn by Giff? Or am I misremembering that from elsewhere?

Garth and Imra are shown on their honeymoon in the Grell pages, skimpily clad:D while deciding to rejoin the Legion for Earthwar.

He may have. I'd have to check the issue as well to be sure.

I thought I remembered that but I haven't read the issue in quite some time. Hmm. I may need to check out that page again. [Big Grin]

The interesting twist about Garth and Imra's wedding was that it wasn't shown "for real" (in continuing continuity) until that half-page flashback in "LSH" v3 n45. (By Greg LaRocque.)

The initial appearance in The Tabloid (C-55) was of their wedding at a militarized Legion compound, with the walls bristling with armaments, and the male Legionnaires shooting off live rounds from rifles (shades of Baghdad yesterday) to celebrate the nuptials.

That entire scene, however, was erased by Superboy, et al., making the timeline "right" by going into the past and the future to deal with the Time Trapper. The wedding that occurred without those troubled surroundings was never depicted until that 30th anniversary issue.

Forgive my ignorance, but in the short time I've been getting back into the Legion after many years, I've found it seems to have become common to refer to this particular tabloid as "That Damned Tabloid". Can someone tell me why? What is "damned" about it? Is it because of the lousy inking by Vinnie Colletta? What's the story?

Its called That Damned Tabloid because of its rarity. At least that's always been my understanding. According to http://www.idyllmtn.com/rac/dc/lsh/lsh_rac.htm, this is the definition:

quote:
THAT DAMNED TABLOID: Fandom nickname for ALL-NEW COLLECTORS' EDITION No. C-55, an oversized comic book that tells the story of Saturn Girl's and Lightning Lad's wedding. Many fans have trouble finding the issue, resulting in the name.

THAT OTHER DAMNED TABLOID: Fandom nickname for LIMITED COLLECTORS' EDITION No. C-49, an oversized comic book that reprinted the Mordru story from ADVENTURE COMICS Nos.369-70.

It's damned hard to find in back-issue stores. And the fact that it contains such an important event in Legion history makes the difficulty of finding it even more annoying.

Re: the OP. There's a one-panel depiction of Brainiac 5 marrying an unnamed blonde (Andromeda?) in Legion Annual # 7, drawn by Mike Collins.

And Keith Giffen drew what passed for a wedding scene between Shadow Lass and Mon-El in Legion (Levitz series) # 52. (with this detached finger I thee wed)

The Tabloids also are cussed out because no even semi-regular method exists for storing them. They won't fit very well scrunched into the side of a long-box. They're not printed in any standard large-magazine (think "Life") size. Keeping them in reasonably sound condition, without risking bruises and tears, is an involved proposition.

CL-- possibly that, but mostly it's in reference to the over-size tabloid format and the relative obscurity of this one in particular. If you CAN find a copy, it's generally not cheap to come by. I lucked out on eBay, though-- got my copy in VF for under $10 with shipping.

There was also a single-panel of Garth/Imra in the 1986 Legionnaires 3 #1, but it depicts only the bride, groom and Superboy.

Colleen Doran drew a Legion wedding scene featuring Saturn Girl and LL, during End of an Era.... I'll have to look up which, but it was one of the Valor issues.

Gibbons drew the entire annual, including the double-page spread near the end. Giffen drew a double-page spread of all Legionnaires and supporting characters in LSH 300.

Thanks, Legion Lad. I just checked awhile ago, and realized I'd mixed the two... [no]
