Reader participation. Back in the day, it was sixteen different kinds of cool that readers got to vote for Legion leader, got the chance to propose characters to appear in the tryouts and were encouraged to send in costume designs. I don't care how dorktastic it was, it was the coolest thing ever, actually soliciting the fans to contribute their kooky ideas.
