OKAY, this is gonna take a minute... (there were 33 character listings with 5 categories each to vote in!)

SHANGHALLA RESULTS
There are a couple interesting ways to display the results of this survey. I ranked the characters BY CATEGORY 1st, interpreting the results as best I could. The results BY INDIVIDUAL are listed below that. In individual listings, I included a 1-line summation of the death & the issue where it happens of each character (in case you were curious...). If you would like to see more about the character and the death in question, you can: try to find a copy of the issue where they died (as a back-issue or in one of the Legion Archives hardback collections) or just look here Legion Help File and download the absolutely amazing Legion help file constructed by Chaim Mattis Keller.

RESULTS BY CATEGORY
Funeral For a Friend - A Legend Is Born
These were legendary moments for either the character or the series. The creators and editors did the character proud in crafting this moment.
#1 at 94% of his votes, Ferro Lad was made a legend in death, reminding others about sacrifice and the power of one person, even if you're not the most beautiful, powerful or popular hero around.
#2 TIED at 58% of their votes, Supergirl and Karate Kid came in second their valorous sacrifices.
#3 at 55% of his votes, Invisible Kid is a visible legend.
#4 TIED at 45% of their votes, Chemical King and Proty was the catalyst that made them legends.
SHOCKINGLY: #5 TIED at 42% of their votes, Mentalla and Nemesis Kid! I suppose either by being a real big villain or an example of Projectra's ferocious strength or what not to do to get into the Legion!

ARGH!!!! Still Seeing Red!!
Votes in this category could have meant that the character's death was needless or questionable. It could also mean that you felt ripped off because you really liked the character and wanted to see more of them; death being a generally final thing for a character, especially if they don't appear in animated cartoons, TV shows or movies.
#1 at 61% of his votes, the way Blok died got us most riled up.
#2 at 58% of his votes, the fate of Jan Arrah angered most Legionworlders.
#3 at 55% of his votes, Leviathan dying as a suicide-wish seemed like a waste to most of us.
#4 TIED at 42% of their votes, Laurel Kent made a surprising step out from her retconned legacy and joined Sun Boy[, Chameleon Boy, Princess Projectra and Karate Kid of the SW6 Legion , Monstress and Dr. Gym'll[b] in our riteous fury at their deaths.
#5 at 39% of their votes, the unsuspecting Academy graduates [b]Nightwind & Power Boy
rounded out the category.

YAY!!! Hated them anyway!
Just as in real life, some people don't get your attention; and if they do, you don't like them. You might daydream about anvils falling on their heads or wish for their removal from your life. In a fictional universe, you can watch it happen without having to wipe the blood or remove a body!
#1 at 55% of his votes, Atmos seemed to deserve death. Well, a the majority of voters relished it anyway!
#2 TIED at 42% of their votes, two of the scummiest Legionnaires ever: Nemesis Kid and Firefist!
#3 at 32% of his votes, Kid Quantum - James Cullen in his 1994 reboot - scored high here, proving that arrogant and ineffective are a bad combination when creating (or rebooting) a Legionnaire.
#4 at 29% of her votes, Laurel Kent scored high here as well as in the ARGH! category -- maybe we just hated her transformation into a manhunter?!?! Or maybe she was underdeveloped mostly and it icked us out that she was flirting with her ancestor in her intro?
#5 TIED at 16% of their votes, Laurel Gand and Proty earned a few votes here, but it probably reflects wo much we like the others.

Who???? They were in the Legion?
These were probably the most unknown characters in the list - either by name or by connection to the Legion. Some of that could have been alleviated by a picture (as comics is a visual medium and a picture is worth more than 1000 words), but that would indicate - to me anyway - that the character wasn't defined well enough if you don't know their name, right?
#1 at 77% of his votes, Eltro Gand was the most forgotten hero.
#2 at 74% of his votes, Reflecto/Stig Ah, unsurprisingly, came in a close second.
#3 at 52 % of his votes, Firefist also came up blank for folks.
#4 at 48% of his votes, Lallorian Beast Boy seemed to be largely forgettable.
#5 at 45 % of their votes, Nardo's victims Blockade Boy & Plant Lad slid below the radar most of our collections.

Yawn. Cheap melodrama still sells?
The votes in this section could indicate a few things, including (but not limited to): the quality of the story's art/writing, the unnecessary death of the character in question, an obvious (bad) attempt at milking sales and/or adding gravitas to a storyline or anniversary issue.
#1 TIED at 48% of their votes, Magnetic Kid and the SW6 Legionnaires Chameleon Boy, Princess Projectra and Karate Kid[b] all died cheap, as far as we're concerned.
#2 at 45% of their votes, [b] Duo Damsel
makes her presence known - just because she has 3 bodies doesn't mean we want to see them die!
#3 at 39% of his votes, Kid Psycho scored high here with his sudden appearance in the Crisis, perishing on the same page.
#4 at 32 % of her votes, Triplicate Girl also makes this list, proving that Lu got the bad end of Legion writing, as far as we're concerned.
#5 at 26% of their votes, the minor, rushed, convenient deaths of Mentalla , Laurel Gand, Grev Mallor/DnA Shadow Monster didn't go over well for quite a few folks.

If there had to be a sacrificed hero from every DC era in the Crisis, the Legion's 'secret weapon' (kept so secret, the members didn't know to call during the Khund-Earth War, the Great Darkness, devastating attacks by Mordru, Omega, etc.), appearing only in his introductory tale and then as a cameo in special issues and Secrets of the Legion of Super-Heroes #3, was a safe bet.

And now, a moment of silence for the dead.

THANKS FOR VOTING!!!!!!!!
__________________________________________________
Shanghalla, resting place for heroes - not the hottest place on 31st century tour guides, but one which we've visited time & time again.

This poll is not meant to offend, but it is crafted from a morbid sense of humor and a trust in the other board members allowing an open conversation about all Legion topics, even the ones that make us uncomfortable (death of even a 'comic book character' carrying a weight in our imagination).
In that spirit, let's be completely crass and RATE THE DEATH!!!

These are fictional characters, and as such, some creator(s)/editor(s) chose to kill them. I want to see what Legionworld members think about the manner of each character's death.

We deserve the chance to make our collective judgment seen (even if only on Legionworld)!

THE DEAD: There's a little over 30 choices (SHOCKED when I started making the list). To be included, the person had to remain dead for pretty much the entire continuity they died in (as far as I could tell - please feel free to post if I missed 1 or got the death wrong). Everyone had to be either a Legion member, identified Legion associate, or whose death was critical in a Legion mission. For instance, I wanted to include the legendary Hate-Face (who?) but could find no actual Legion adventure where he participated; Laurel Kent, on the other hand, makes the list for participating in several adventures as a Legion academy student from Grell/Shooter era to almost the end of Levitz era (where she was revealed to be a Manhunter robot and commited suicide after failing against the Legion). Also, I grouped together deaths that happened in the same moment (i.e. Nightwind & Powerboy were both killed by invading Khund forces in the TMK Khund War storyline, the Tornado Twins Don & Dawn Allen were both executed by the Dominators in TMK leading up to the Terra Mosaic storyline, etc.).

THE RATING SYSTEM: Over many years of morbid conversations (and way too many funerals), my friends and I have developed 5 values for rating a death. Here's a full explanation of the criteria (as adapted to comic book form):
#1) FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND - a 'good death', befits a hero, the character's moment of triumph

#2) ARGH!!!!! I can't believe they died! I still see red when I think about it!

#3) YAY!!! The Luck Lords are smiling on me! I hated that character! I only wished I could have done it myself!

#4) WHO? - they were in the Legion? they died? Who the heck were they? Did they only appear in half a panel or something?

#5) Yawn. Cheap ploy to sell more books or add drama. Why do they still do this stuff?

Even if you're completely offended (and I apologize if you are), let your voice be heard! Go on & vote!

Interesting poll; I think it needs more categories, though: some of the listed deaths IMO don't really fit any of the available choices. Monstress, for example: certainly not going to get a 3 or 4 from me, not a 'heroic' death so it shouldn't really get a 1, it fit the story DnA chose to tell so it doesn't really deserve a 2 or 5 either.

Other thoughts: My biggest "AARGH!" goes to the deaths of the SW6 Cham, Val, and Projectra: such a waste of story potential there (dissident factions on Orando seeking to replace Queen Projectra with her younger counterpart, just for a start ... )

Most memorable in a good way: the execution of Nemesis Kid.

"And that reminds me" dept.: you forgot the preboot Emerald Empress.

i agree that Monstress doesn't really fit into anyone, but i tried to make it as wide a spread as possible

and Sarya of Venegar doesn't fit because she was a villain, always and thoroughly -- the only villains that made the list were either once a legionnaire (like Nemesis Kid) or revealed to be working for the Legion (like Mentalla) or whose death was instrumental in the success of a legion mission (like Beast Boy, Plant Lad, or Nightwind)

which sucks because i thought Sarya kicked major butt

One of the best polls I've ever voted in!

Very cool, Andy.

thanks, cobalt!

i'm trying to come up with at least 1 new poll a week (each poll lasting around 10 days) ... with the intention of keeping a couple polls juggled at any time by me

i keep on thinking of different ones - fun, a little harsh, a little out there, all that stuff

keep on coming back and voting
