Just to start off from a quote by Mystery Lad on another post...
"CHAMELEON: Poor Cham. "I just wanted to help!" I don't see 'poisonously bitter' from last issue's description. That still has me scratching my head. I've gotta admit, usurping a teammate's ID to make overtures that teammate might be opposed to is inadviseable... no matter how well intentioned. Cham didn't deserve that attack, though."
This has been a Durlan trait which has been a problem throughout Legion hsitory. Look at the whole Yera/Violet mess of years ago. Yera continued to impersonate Legionnaires EVEN AFTER all of that. Remember the the Legion picnic?reunion from the original incarnation? Was that Gim and Yera going at it in the lake, or was that Yera fulfilling Gim's fantasy in the form of Luornu? Whatever the case, that was a direct violation to anyone. Unless it's in the scope of a mission's needs, Durlans should not be impersonating fellow Legionnaires without their consent! So with that, Cham deserved to be chewed out by Jo and Garth. I know his intenetions were good, but it's not acceptable. Besides, how long was it going to be before Jo and Garth encountered one another after the supposed apology? What was Cham going to do at that point?

He really seems to be the stranger in a strange land. Just doesn't get certain social conventions that the others - although they are from different planets/cultures - share. This is the most alien portrayal of Chameleon Boy we've had. He has often been regarded by others as strange but has himself seemed to fit right into the common social behaviour of the group (which was not always the case with other Durlans).
I suspect these legionnaires are divided on if or when Cham should impersonate them. Certainly active deception is not appreciated, but he did seem to be practicing with Saturn Girl on the ship to Colu - and didn't get punched out by Brainy for his caricature.
Re: the poisonously bitter - it could be several things. Cos just making wild and distraught accusations, someone messing with his (and other legionnaires') perceptions, or maybe Cham is poisonously bitter about Durla (or something else) for a yet-unknown reason.

it did say in an early issue (#1 or 2), that Cham and Sun Boy had an argument about religion. there is a side to Cham that we haven't seen yet. maybe a bit of the social activist as before, fighting for Durlan rights and social acceptance.

Actually, I forgot about that interaction scene between Saturn Girl and Cham on the ship. As far as the Sun Boy incident, I think it was mentioned that they actually got into a fist fight over some religion issue. True, there seems to be an "edgy side" to Cham we have yet to see.

Funny it was Garth who gave him the big verbal dressing-down, when Imra actually encouraged him to take Garth's form (eeeewwww the dirty hussy). No wonder he's confused by humans.
Just another reminder that though LL and SG seem to be a fated couple they really seem to have nothing in common sometimes.
