Don't have the details yet but I've gotten a sneak look at March's covers and there is a solicit cover for a Showcase featuring the Legion! More details as I (or anyone else) can find them.

That's great news!

I'm an Archives boy myself, but more Legion stuff is always cool.

Yeah, there were Fawcett era reprints that were skipped over in the Shazam Archive, but I seem to recall there being some other oddities as far as stuff getting left out.

And yeah, I'm pretty excited about this, even though I've got all the stories in Archives!

for those of us who don't pay attention to such matters, how is a Showcase collection different from the regular archives?

It's softcover, twice as long, a third of the price, and black and white.

The black and white is what puts me off. That said, I only buy Archives when they're on sale.

I don't want to knock the Showcases though.

I'm usually surprised how little the black and white impairs my enjoyment.

I think they're great as samplers of particular series, but anything one is serious about one should buy in Archives.

Even though they are B&W I love the Showcases. I've gotten issues I probably never would have read before. Plus I really like the crisp, clean look of just black and white. I think that's one of the reasons The Walking Dead is still my favorite book and why I just flip over Barry's black and white cover looks he gives us.

Ditto (to Outdoor Miner). Color is extremely important to me in comics.

I'm really surprised/angered at the way all the hard work those men and women do is usually the very last thing that gets recognised by the comic-reading public and usually TPTB too.

Is color really that expensive? Is that why the Archives are so expensive and these Showcases a lot more affordable? I'd never realised that.

Still, its great that the Legion are getting a Showcase. I wonder how popular it'll be since a lot of people seem to have gone the Archives Legion route judging by how many volumes they've produced of that.

Edit ('cause quickdraw EDE and LL got in while I was still writing) - With all this positive appraisal maybe I should give one of these Showcases a go. EDE's probably very right when he says that they're good introduction books to characters or teams that I've never really been exposed ot much before - like say Jonah Hex or the Doom Patrol.

Blacula-

color is expewnsive, but do is paper - if you don't need color (especially good color), you can use cheaper paper, and that lowers the costs.

it sounds like the Showcases are like Marvel's Essentials then? I have the first 2 X-men volumes of that run. A good format, since the original color of the time was pretty awful; in many cases the art looks better, cleaner. I'm not sure 60s art would be as well suited as Bronze Age art, tho.

Thanks Kent. The 'no color = cheaper paper' thing does make a lot of sense. That's probably the reason right there.

Does anyone know how many issues this edition will include btw?

Showcase is printed on newsprint so you get a bit of that toxic ink smell comics used to have.

The page count is usually a few pages over 500. Since the Archives are 250+ I would think it would go to the end of Archive 2 for the price of $17.

And you have to take into account that the archives have to be re-colored. So that significantly boosts the costs.

No idea how many volumes the Legion Showcase will have but Superman is on its third (IIRC), House of Mystery is doing its second and I think Batman may already have two. I have ordered every issue since this format started and the only disappointment so far was the Jonah Hex having the last 20 pages or so out of order. You just have to remember to skip around otherwise it was a great volume.

Anyway, I would expect the Legion to at least follow through all the Adventure/Action issues and probably all the early Superboy appearances as well. Not sure what the cutoff will be but I would guess that depends on sales.

I forgot to mention that if you order through DCBS, the first time around the Showcases are usually 50% off, bringing them down to $8.49 each. After the first solicit most are still available at the 40% discount of $10.19.
